Focus on!
When a person tends towards something, he should turn towards it with all his might in order to get the knowledge, the state, the wisdom and the pleasure he would derive from it and reap maximum benefit. That is to say, he should turn towards and focus on that thing with all his soul, heart, reason, mind, nafs, senses, constitution and the concentration of his heart.
What he hopes to get from that thing will be lacking in proportion to his deficiency in tending towards that thing.
This is the case whether the thing that one tends towards is material or spiritual.
Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi says that in his youth he received a lot of knowledge from an elderly female saint, a friend of Allah, called Fatima binti Müsenna and remarks:
“She would not allow anyone but me to her presence. When she was asked why that was the case, she replied: “Others come to my presence as half of themselves. Namely, although they come to see me, their hearts are left behind with their jobs, their houses and their families. Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, on the other hand, is my child. He is the apple of my eye.
When he comes to see me, he comes as a whole. When he sits, he sits properly. He does not leave behind anything like the others do. His thoughts and his heart are not left behind.”
This is what it means to fully tend towards something. The person who succeeds in doing this achieves a lot of wisdom.
Allah (ﷻ) knows best.
